1 John 3:1

The closing words of chapter 2 spoke of being “born of him.” That thought moves John to stop and wonder. “Behold” summons the readers to look closely at something astonishing: the Father has given His love in such measure that people once estranged from Him are now named His children. The question “what manner of love” is less an inquiry than an exclamation. John does not attempt to measure this love; he wants his readers to stand amazed before it.

The verb “hath bestowed” is in the perfect tense, describing a gift given once and still in force. God’s love is not a passing mood toward His people. The name given to believers rests on that settled gift. Many early manuscripts add the words “and we are,” a brief phrase that fits John’s style and drives the point home: this sonship is not a courtesy title. Those whom God calls His children truly belong to His family through the new birth.

John uses the word for “children” rather than the word he reserves for Jesus as “the Son.” Christ is the eternal Son by nature; believers become children by grace. The distinction protects both the uniqueness of Christ and the wonder of adoption. Nothing in the readers’ background or achievements earned them this place. It was bestowed.

The second half of the verse explains why this new identity is not always recognized. “The world” here means human society organized apart from God and resistant to Him. It failed to recognize Jesus for who He was, and it will likewise misread those who bear His likeness. The opposition the readers had felt, including the scorn of those who had left the fellowship, was no sign that they had lost God’s favor. It was what Jesus had told His disciples to expect. The more clearly God’s children reflect their Father, the stranger they may appear to those who do not know Him, yet that strangeness confirms whose they are.

Word / Phrase Notes

ποταπὴν ἀγάπην (potapēn agapēn) — what manner of love

The adjective asks “of what sort?” and in New Testament usage often carries a note of astonishment, as when the disciples marveled at Jesus calming the sea. John is not asking for a definition; he is expressing wonder at love of an unexpected and incomparable quality, shown in God’s act of making sinners His children.

τέκνα θεοῦ (tekna theou) — the sons of God

John’s word is “children,” emphasizing shared life and family belonging through birth from God. In his writings the title “Son” is kept for Jesus, while believers are “children” who receive their standing by grace. The phrase points to a real relationship produced by the new birth, not merely a legal label.
