1 John Chapter 2

John presents Christ as Advocate and propitiation, then tests every profession by obedience, love, separation from the world, faithful confession of the Son, and readiness for His appearing.

Confidence at His Coming

1 John 2:1

John’s tone changes from the general “we” of chapter 1 to the tender address “My little children.” The aged apostle speaks as a spiritual father to people he regards as his own family in the faith. He has just insisted that no believer can claim to be without sin (1:8, 10). He now guards that truth from being twisted into an excuse. “These things write I unto you, that ye sin not.” The purpose of confession and cleansing is a life increasingly free from sin. God’s provision for failure is never permission to fail, and John wants his readers to aim at obedience with full seriousness.

Yet John is a realist about the Christian path. “And if any man sin” acknowledges that a sincere believer may still stumble into a particular act of sin. The tense points to a specific lapse rather than a settled way of life. John does not respond with despair or with a threat of rejection. He points at once to a Person: “we have an advocate with the Father.” By saying “we,” he places himself among those who need this help.

The Advocate is the risen Christ, standing in the very presence of the Father. The phrase “with the Father” echoes the language of 1:2 and John 1:1, where the Word is face to face with God. Christ’s work for His people did not end at the cross. He now ministers in the heavenly sanctuary as High Priest, interceding for those who come to God through Him (Hebrews 7:25; 9:24). His plea does not overcome a reluctant Father, for the Father Himself gave the Son. The Advocate represents the sinner before the One who already loves him.

This Advocate is “Jesus Christ the righteous.” His fitness to plead rests on His own perfect obedience. He was tempted in every point as we are, yet remained without sin (Hebrews 4:15). An advocate stained by the same guilt could not stand before the throne; one who had never known human weakness could not fully represent us. Christ is both. The believer who falls therefore has somewhere to go immediately, and his confidence rests on the righteousness of Christ rather than his own record.

Word / Phrase Notes

τεκνία μου (teknia mou) — my little children

The diminutive expresses affection rather than physical age. Jesus used the same word for His disciples in the upper room, and John repeats it throughout the letter. It frames everything that follows as the counsel of a father who wants his children kept from harm.

1 John 4:4

παράκλητον (paraklēton) — an advocate

The word describes one called alongside to help, especially one who speaks on another’s behalf before a judge. In John’s Gospel it names the Holy Spirit, whom Jesus called “another Comforter.” Here it names the Son, who pleads the believer’s case in heaven while the Spirit works within. The sense of mediator or intercessor fits the priestly setting John has in view.
