2 John 1:1

The letter opens without a personal name. The writer calls himself “the elder,” and the bare title assumes that his readers will know at once who is speaking. Early Christian testimony linked these short letters with the apostle John, by then advanced in years and very likely the last surviving member of the Twelve. The title suits both his age and his standing. He needs no list of credentials; a lifetime of witness to the Word of life (1 John 1:1–3) and a long pastoral bond with the churches of Asia made one word sufficient.

“The elect lady and her children” has been read either as a particular Christian woman and her family or as a congregation personified, with its members as her children. Several features favor the second reading. John moves freely between singular and plural address, speaks of a commandment the whole group has heard “from the beginning,” warns the group about visiting teachers, and in verse 13 sends greetings from the children of an “elect sister,” most naturally a sister church. Scripture often pictures God’s people as a woman, whether as Zion or as the bride of Christ (Isaiah 54:1–6; Ephesians 5:25–27). The possibility that a specific woman hosted and led the house church cannot be excluded, and the two readings may overlap. “Elect” marks the congregation as chosen by God and belonging to Him by grace.

The emphatic “whom I love” is at once qualified: “in the truth.” John’s affection is no vague sentiment. It lives within the sphere of the gospel he has received—the truth embodied in Jesus Christ, who is Himself “the truth” (John 14:6). And the love is shared. “Not I only, but also all they that have known the truth” widens the circle to every believer who has come to know the gospel and continues in it. The perfect tense of “have known” describes knowledge that has taken root and remains.

From its first line the letter binds together the two words that will govern it. Truth gives love its shape and its limits; love gives truth its warmth and its reach. A church that keeps both is held together by more than temperament or preference. Its members belong to one another because they belong to the same Lord and confess the same Christ.

Word / Phrase Notes

ὁ πρεσβύτερος (ho presbyteros) — the elder

The word can describe an older man or a church officer, and here it carries both senses. Used with the article and without a name, it functions as a title of recognized standing. Peter, also an apostle, called himself a “fellow elder,” showing that the term could express pastoral responsibility with humility rather than rank.

ἐκλεκτῇ κυρίᾳ (eklektē kyria) — the elect lady

Kyria is the feminine of kyrios, “lord,” and served as a courteous address for a woman of standing. Eklektos means chosen. The phrase most likely personifies a local church as a respected lady whose members are her children, matching the “elect sister” of verse 13 and the biblical portrayal of God’s people as a woman.
