The writer again calls himself “the elder,” the same title that opens 2 John, and the likeness of style and vocabulary between the two letters points to one author, the aged apostle John. This time the recipient is a named individual, “the wellbeloved Gaius.” Gaius was among the most common names in the Roman world, and several men bearing it appear in the New Testament (Acts 19:29; 20:4; Romans 16:23). Nothing links any of them securely with this believer. Everything known of him comes from this letter, and it portrays a faithful, open-handed Christian.

John’s affection is unmistakable. Gaius is “beloved,” a term John will use four times in this short note, and the elder adds, “whom I love in the truth.” The pronoun is emphatic: “I myself love.” In a congregation where another leader was slandering John and rejecting his messengers, Gaius would value that assurance. “In the truth” names the sphere of the love. It is affection rooted in the gospel and in shared loyalty to Christ, a bond that runs deeper than natural friendship.

The greeting is brief, lacking the extended blessing of 2 John 3, yet it sets the tone. Truth and love will again be the twin concerns of the letter, now applied to the practical matter of how a church welcomes those who serve the Lord.
