1 John 4:1

John has just said that believers know Christ abides in them “by the Spirit which he hath given us” (1 John 3:24). That claim raises an immediate danger. Others were also speaking in the Spirit’s name, and some of their messages contradicted the gospel the church had received. So the apostle turns at once to discernment. His tender address, “Beloved,” shows that the warning comes from pastoral care. He does not want those he loves to be carried away by every inspired-sounding voice.

“Believe not every spirit” may carry the force of “stop believing every spirit,” implying that some members had already been too ready to accept anything presented as a revelation. John speaks of “spirits” because every prophet speaks under some influence. Behind a true prophet stands the Spirit of God; behind a false one stands another spirit, however devout the speaker may appear. Spiritual intensity, eloquence, or wonder-working power cannot settle the question. Scripture long ago warned that a sign might come to pass while the prophet still led people away from the Lord (Deuteronomy 13:1–3).

The remedy is to “try the spirits whether they are of God.” The verb is the language of the assayer who tests metal to prove whether it is sound. The command is plural and continuous, a responsibility for the whole congregation and not only for its leaders. God does not ask His people to be credulous; He gives them His Word as the standard by which every claim must be weighed (Isaiah 8:20; Acts 17:11). Testing is not hostility toward the prophetic gift. Paul could say in one breath, “Despise not prophesyings,” and, “Prove all things” (1 Thessalonians 5:20–21). The reason for vigilance is sobering: “many false prophets are gone out into the world.” They went out like missionaries with a message of their own, just as Jesus had foretold (Matthew 24:11, 24). The church’s safety still lies in humbly comparing every teaching with what God has already revealed.

Word / Phrase Notes

δοκιμάζετε τὰ πνεύματα (dokimazete ta pneumata) — try the spirits

The verb describes examining something to establish whether it is authentic, as metals or coins were assayed. In the New Testament it is used for testing conduct, judging what is excellent, and proving teaching. The present imperative calls for an ongoing habit of discernment exercised by the whole church, measured by God’s revealed Word.

ψευδοπροφῆται (pseudoprophētai) — false prophets

A false prophet is one who claims to speak for God without having been sent by Him. Israel faced such figures repeatedly, and Jesus warned that they would multiply before His return. Here they are linked with the antichrists who had left the fellowship and whose influence still spread.
