1 John 1:1

John opens without greeting, name, or address. The sentence begins with a neuter relative, “That which,” and the reader must wait until verse 3 for the main verb. The neuter allows John to hold together the message about Christ and the Person of Christ Himself; in his usage a neuter can point to a person, and the rest of the prologue makes plain that the One proclaimed is the living Son. “From the beginning” differs from the Gospel’s “In the beginning.” There the Word already existed when all things began; here John looks from that beginning forward, insisting that the One who always was has now come within reach of human senses.

The verbs climb in intimacy. To hear is to receive testimony at some distance. To see “with our eyes” rules out vision, dream, or imagination. To have “looked upon” translates a verb for steady, attentive gazing, the same verb used when the disciples beheld His glory in John 1:14. Finally, “our hands have handled” brings the witness to physical contact. The word recalls the risen Lord’s invitation: “handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have” (Luke 24:39). The Christ the apostles knew was no phantom wearing a mere appearance of humanity. He ate, walked, was touched, died, and rose bodily.

This emphasis answers teachers who were saying that the divine could not truly unite with flesh and that the man Jesus was merely a vehicle for a spiritual Christ. John does not argue in the abstract. He testifies as one of the “we” who were there.

“The Word of life” names the subject: the message that brings life and the Person who is that life. Christian faith is therefore anchored in history. It does not ask people to climb toward God by speculation; it announces that God has come down, in a body, to be known.

Word / Phrase Notes

ἐψηλάφησαν (epsēlaphēsan) — have handled

The verb means to touch, feel, or examine by hand, sometimes with the sense of groping toward an object. It appears where the risen Jesus invites the disciples to verify His bodily reality, and in Hebrews it describes the tangible mountain of Sinai. John uses it to make the incarnation unmistakably physical: the eternal Word was available to human touch.

τοῦ λόγου τῆς ζωῆς (tou logou tēs zōēs) — of the Word of life

The phrase can mean the message that concerns life or the Person who is life. John seems to intend both. The prologue moves from the proclaimed word to the One who is its content, echoing the Gospel’s identification of Jesus as the Word in whom “was life.” The preposition implied by the construction suggests “concerning the Word of life,” marking what the testimony is about.
